How about Susan Roth’s DO RE MI (Houghton Mifflin) about Guido d’Arezzo who started the practice of writing down music a thousand years ago when Guido was a young choirboy in Tuscany. Actually he got little support at first, until he met a Benedictine monk who knew how to write things down in that time. With the monk’s help, Guido designed a written language for music and became known as the “Father of Music.”
